Working on remote sites comes with a wide variety of risks, and sometimes, what should be a routine day can take a dangerous turn. I experienced this first hand when I had a near miss that could have ended in disaster.
Due to severe weather conditions, a section of the road on the site I was visiting was washed away, creating a significant hazard. The result was terrifying. The car I was travelling in came dangerously close to the edge of a cliff! Thankfully, no one was hurt. But the situation could have been catastrophic, and it was a stark reminder of how critical it is to have the right tools in place.
How Connect could have helped
If the Connect app had been in use, the situation could have played out very differently:
Access notifications about the washed-out road
A previous worker could have logged a safety note, alerting site operators to the hazard. Access restrictions could then have been put in place, ensuring anyone traveling to the site acknowledged the risk before proceeding.
Real-time weather and safety updates
The operations team could have issued a weather warning for the site, triggering a notification about heavy rainfall. With this information, we could have adjusted our route accordingly.
Immediate hazard reporting
If someone had already reported the flooded road, we would have been aware before arriving. Alternatively, we could have logged a safety note ourselves to prevent others from facing the same risk.
Had the team been using the Connect app, we could have avoided this dangerous situation altogether. The app’s proactive features are designed to keep people informed and safe, even in the most unpredictable conditions.
Safety isn’t just about compliance. It’s about making sure everyone gets home at the end of the day. Let’s take every step possible to protect our teams before accidents happen.
